1. What is a Self-Employed Nanny?
A self-employed nanny is someone who works independently—either with several families or with one family on a short-term basis. The key point is: she isn’t employed by the family. Instead, she sets her own rates, manages her own schedule, and takes care of her own admin.
It’s important to know that families can’t ask a nanny to be self-employed just to avoid employment rules. The nanny needs to have this status in place before starting work. If not, HMRC could get involved.
Personally, I love the flexibility this status gives me. It’s perfect for families who need occasional help—maybe their regular nanny is away, their plans have changed last-minute, or they simply need an extra pair of hands. It allows me to step in when needed and offer support without long-term commitments.
2. What Are the Advantages?
-
Freedom & Flexibility
I choose when I work and with whom. This makes it easier to adapt to families’ changing needs, and gives me a better work-life balance. -
Better Pay
As an independent nanny, I set my own rates. These usually range from £23 to £30 per hour during the week, and can go up to £35 or more on weekends or for specialised roles. -
Perfect for Expat Families
I’ve worked with many families who have just moved to London. They often don’t plan to stay forever, so hiring someone short-term, who already knows the area and can help the children adjust, is ideal. -
Variety & Experience
Working with different families gives me the chance to support children of all ages and backgrounds. No two days are the same—and I love that.
3. Responsibilities That Come With the Job
-
Admin & Finances
I manage all the admin myself: sending invoices, tracking payments, doing my taxes. I’m responsible for my own contributions and reporting to HMRC. It might sound daunting at first, but it becomes second nature. -
No Extra Costs for Families
One big plus for parents: they don’t need to pay for holidays, pensions, sick leave, or employer contributions. For example, if they go away for a few weeks, they’re not paying me during that time. This makes budgeting a bit easier for them, even if the hourly rate is slightly higher. -
Insurance & Peace of Mind
While it’s not mandatory, many of us take out public liability insurance. It’s reassuring—for us and the families we work with.
4. Deposit & Cancellations
To protect our time and avoid last-minute cancellations, most self-employed nannies (myself included) request a 50% non-refundable deposit when a booking is confirmed. It helps secure our schedules and provides some financial stability.
5. The Less Glamorous Side
Of course, it’s not all perfect.
-
No Job Security
We don’t get sick pay, holiday pay, or a pension—unless we choose to organise those things ourselves. -
Admin Can Be Tricky
If you’re not used to dealing with paperwork and finances, it can feel overwhelming at first. But there’s support out there, and it gets easier with time. -
Income Fluctuations
It’s not always easy to guarantee steady work. Some weeks are packed, others are quiet. Being organised and planning ahead is key to managing this rhythm.
Final Thoughts
Becoming a self-employed nanny has been a rewarding choice for me. It offers a unique balance between independence and connection—with the children, with the families, and with my own schedule.
If you’re a family looking for short-term help, or a nanny thinking of becoming self-employed, I hope this gives you a better idea of what it’s really like.
